A product passes through many hands before it reaches a shelf, and through more afterwards. The passport travels with it, gathering what each stage knows and keeping it verifiable long after the consignment is forgotten.

Name, GTIN, product type, a photograph, and the fields a shopper or an inspector needs. The product type decides how long its passports stay online, because a battery and a cardboard sleeve are not the same obligation.
Publishing freezes the version. Minting draws a code per item, signs each passport, and freezes the issuer with it, so a company that renames itself leaves every code already printed verifying exactly as before.
The code resolves to a page built for a phone in a shop. The signature can be checked against a public key without asking us anything, which is what separates a passport from a web page.
Five commitments, and the platform is built so that each one is checkable rather than claimed.
Every passport is cryptographically signed and independently verifiable. A scan proves what the manufacturer actually published, not what a web page happens to say today.
Opaque, non sequential serials on GS1 Digital Link carriers. A code reveals nothing about batch size, production volume, or the order in which items were made.
A code on the product resolves in milliseconds, on any phone, with no app to install. The public read path stays up even while everything else is being deployed.
Materials, facility, batch and custody, recorded as the product moves and frozen at the moment of publication. Provenance a buyer or an inspector can follow back.
Durability, repairability, recycled content and end of life instructions, carried in the passport because that is what the Ecodesign regulation asks products to disclose.

The Digital Product Passport is law, not a trend. Three regulations set the shape of it, and the first hard date arrives in February 2027.
The framework that introduces the Digital Product Passport. It entered into force in July 2024 and replaces the old Ecodesign Directive. Individual product groups gain their own requirements through delegated acts, with textiles, furniture, tyres, iron, steel and aluminium among the first in line.
